Dear Evil HR Lady,
I just recently got hired at a bank and my start date is not until 21st of January. the position is less then what I held in another bank couple years back so I am way overqualified for this position. I just noticed that the position that I really want and one very similar to previous one I had just become posted on this banks website that I just got hired at, should I apply for that position or would that affect my hire with the company? Thanks for the advice.
This is precisely why people find it difficult to land a job that they are overqualified for-companies are concerned that you’ll do exactly as you are doing–still looking for a better job.
This is understandable.
However, the chances of it going over well if you say, “Hey, I know I haven’t done even on day’s work yet, but I really would like this higher level position!” are about zero.
If they hadn’t offered you the job yet, it would be a different situation.
Typically, companies don’t want you posting for an internal position until you’ve been working there for a year, at minimum. You already agreed to take the lower position, so I would take it, bust your buns and do a great job. Then in a year, feel free to start posting out for higher level positions in this company.
Now, if a better position opens up at a different bank (not just a different branch of the same bank) feel free to apply to that. Just keep in mind that if you quit your current (new) job in less than a year (and really, less than 18 months), you’ll burn a bridge there.
I strongly discourage burning bridges that you don’t have to burn, but clearly not everyone agrees with me.
Congratulations on your new position!
