I have an employee, Kate, who does mediocre work. Not good enough to be promoted, but good enough to keep from being fired. This isn’t a problem, except she’s constantly complaining about the job. I want to tell her to go find another job or shut up. The other employees don’t complain, so I know it’s not a “me” problem.

Interesting article–respond to the complainer with a plan of action, timely evaluations, and reviews.
Good advice. It beats what we do at my Agency, which is to ask her if she wants some cheese with her whine! 🙂
The other employees not complaining does’t mean you’re not the problem.
They might be afraid to take the risk of saying anything.
You say this employee complains but don’t say what she complains about.
