Röbynn Europe worked as a personal trainer manager for Equinox, a fitness center. They fired her after 10 months for being late an excessive number of times. Europe claimed this was pretext–an excuse–to cover up for the racial discrimination she faced.
It’s pretty easy to prove that an employee was late 47 times in a short time period, and there are certainly jobs where being punctual is critical for success. Europe didn’t dispute that she was frequently late.
So why did a jury not only side with Europe but also turn around an $11.25 million verdict?
