Your annoying coworker may be a narcissist

Is it just me or are you surrounded by narcissists?

We aren’t diagnosing anyone, not even my, uhhh, your ex. We’re HR. We don’t diagnose, but narcissistic traits are on the rise.

I’m not joking about the increase in people who demonstrate narcissistic traits (see how I didn’t diagnose there?). Psychologists have noted a steady increase in college students who demonstrate narcissistic traits.  And the college students of today are the employees of tomorrow.

If you haven’t had to manage or been managed by a narcissist, never fear you will be. And you need to know how to deal with it.

Psychologist Nigel Barber, PhD, writes:

Narcissists tend to be fragile, so increasing narcissism helps explain why young people suffer from unprecedented levels of anxiety, depression, loneliness, and suicidal thinking. Young women are particularly vulnerable here because the internet exaggerates insecurity over their personal appearance.”

If you think of a narcissist as just the overly obnoxious brain surgeon or Mean Girls’ Regina George or Mad Men’s Don Draper, you’re going to be shocked to find out that the narcissist is also the person sobbing in the corner because you told them that they have to be on time to work.

The DSM 5 gives nine characteristics of narcissists. These are

  1. A grandiose sense of self-importance.

  2. Fantasies about having or deserving.

  3. A sense of self-superiority.

  4. A need for excessive admiration.

  5. A sense of entitlement.

  6. Exploitative behavior.

  7. A lack of empathy.

  8. Frequent envy.

  9. Arrogance.

An employee or manager doesn’t need all of those traits for them to be a problem at work. Please join us with expert Brenda Neckvatal on
